“Bridge over Troubled Water” is a song written by Simon & Garfunkel and released on January 26, 1970. Its lyrics are very poignant and held a great deal of spiritual meaning to me as a returning Veteran searching for answers after serving in Vietnam (1965-66). We came home to a divided country and were confronted with many questions about our role in what was considered an unwanted war. We did not have many of the services provided to returning vets today, and were left to fend for ourselves in the face of what we perceived as an ungrateful nation. Many suffered alone and paid a high price mentally, physically, and spiritually. I was one of the lucky ones, guided through the “troubled waters” of reentry into civilian life by a church pastor and former chaplain who had “been there.” He became my Bridge, helping me to navigate the transition. Rev. Liz and I are both retired pastors, and I also served as a chaplain with the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association (CVMA) for six years. Their motto is "Vets Helping Vets." It’s now time for us to pay it forward and become a Bridge for others. Our mission is twofold. First, we want to help Veterans and their families reconnect with God by providing spiritual guidance, prayer, and fellowship. And secondly, helping returning vets and their families connect with Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs), non-profits, service groups (such as the VFW), churches, and other community groups who can help fill their individual needs. Please fill out the contact form below, and we will be happy to assist you with your specific spiritual needs. Let Rev. Liz and me be your Bridge, a Haven of Rest, as you deal with reentering civilian life, or simply need a friend to listen to you. |
